NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned to the second week of May the hearing on the economically weaker section (EWS) in the all India quota in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination for post graduation (PG).

Senior advocate Arvind Datar mentioned the petitions before a Bench headed byJustice D Y Chandrachud to know when the case will be taken up since the Bench is sitting only till lunch and so it may not come up for hearing.

He also apprised the Court that the exam is on May 23 and the results will be announced on May 30 and so there should be a finality in the matter before that.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had said that merit should be socially contextualized and reconceptualized as an instrument that advances social goals that the society values such as equality.

While upholding the constitutional validity of reservations to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), it had said: “Merit cannot be reduced to narrow definitions of performance in an open competitive examination which only provides formal equality of opportunity.”

Rejecting the pleas against the constitutional validity of OBC quota in All India quota seats, the Court had held that “tne union government is not required to seek permission of this court before providing reservation in AIQ seats.”
