NEW DELHI: Uproarious scenes by the ruling and the opposition parties were witnessed at the beginning of Tuesday’s sitting in both the Houses of Parliament over Congress President and Rajya Sabha Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge’s “dog” remark in a public meeting in Alwar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 11.30 AM as the ruling BJP members created noisy scenes and the Congress members clashed with them with shouts at each other on Kharge’s remarks.

Goyal dubbed Kharge’s speech as “indecent.” He said: “The language used is unfortunate. I condemn the manner in which he used indecent language, aid baseless things and attempted to present lies before the nation.”

Kharge did not call Prime Minister Modi as “dog”, but the BJP members in both the Houses claimed he did so. He had talked of sacrifices by the Congress leaders in the freedom struggle while stating that “not even a dog of the BJP was lost” for the country.

Reacting to Goyal’s charge, Kharge said what he said in Alwar town of Rajasthan on Monday at a rally also addressed by Rahul Gandhi was outside the House, not inside and so there is no need to discuss it here. Goyal went to the extend of demanding that Kharge should be removed from the House.

Even while insisting that what he said politically outside the House need not be discussed, Kharge said he can still say that they had no role in the freedom struggle. Refusing to apologise, Kharge said: “Those who apologised to the Britishers are asking us who fought the freedom struggle to apologise.” Noting that Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had sacrificed for the country, he asked: “Who among you gave your life for unity of this country?”

Goyal went on to assert that Kharge was a living example of what Mahatma Gandhi said after Independence that the Congress should be disbanded. “Khargeji is the national party who doesn’t know how to speak. Unless he apologies, he has no right to be here in the Rajya Sabha,” Goyal added.

In the Rajya Sabha, leader of House and union minister Piyush Goyal demanded an apology by Kharge to the BJP as well as to Parliament and the people who elected the BJP with an absolute majority. “He gave us a glimpse of his mindset and jealousy.”
